CD REVIEWS

Abyss
Títle Sin Ángeles (2004)
Label Goimusic

Amidst this recent record releasing "boom", the result of which no-one knows for sure, we find this second release by Abyss. I wanted to start the review in a happy mood because their progressive side finally appears clearly within their melodic metal. But of course, now you will think this is a progressive melodic metal, and the hundreds of European Happy metal bands will come to mind, with their alleged singers that destroy our eardrums with their falsettos, or just melodic metal bands that believe that not using a 3x4 tempo means becoming the new Dream Theater.

Melodic songs are not made up of rhythm changes, melodies and scales that separately would be incomprehensible, but put together become nice to listen to.

However, this is exactly what Abyss have achieved with this "Sin Ángeles", despite we can find a rhythm base a little too typical of progressive bands in songs such as "Dulce Mal" and "Medio Oriente". However, they do surprise us, especially with "De Fuego y Traición", as well as with the subsequent songs that lead to the end of the record. Really good changes. Very elaborate and well executed melodies, both by the musicians and that great voice of Jaime García.

A great design (to compensate that of their previous cd) that wraps up a great work, from the composition to the execution, where the depth of the lyrics could be improved. Although they deal very well with the human soul (feelings, impulses, character...) by using the figure of the angel, they do not go further and leave no open paths; they had to forget something in order to improve in their third, or they would have had to retire with this one.
